CCEPA and the Situating Science Cluster for the Humanist and Social Studies of Science present a national five-part series of presentations exploring the ethical questions that emerge as we examine our TRUST IN THE NEW SCIENCES.

There are three remaining lectures in this exciting, nation-wide series. Halifax will host Cornelius Borck on March 18th and Evelyn Fox Keller on March 30th. Both events take place in Alumni Hall in the New Academic Building of the University of King’s College. The events begin at 7:00 pm.

March 18, 7:00 pm, Alumni Hall (in the New Academic Building) at the University of King's College. Dr. Cornelius Borck (University of Lubeck, Germany) presents "Mind the Gap: The Neurosciences and Their Determination to Explain the Human."
» Poster – Part 4 (pdf)

Abstract: Understanding the brain and the biological basis of mind, consciousness and behavior is the ultimate challenge. The neurosciences, through increasingly sophisticated technology, provide fascinating insights into human cognition, emotions and sociality. Is this the imminent advent of a definitive understanding of our mental apparatus, or the warning of a brave new world of manipulation, mind reading and thought control? This talk will look at the incredible dynamics pushing our theorizing about the mind in new directions, while opening more ways for intervening in the brain. Are we witness to the opening of a new chapter in the human evolution?

Sponsored by Situating Science, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Public Affairs, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and Dalhousie University's Evolution Study Group
