The Faculty of Philosophy and Education of the University of Vienna announces the position of a
Full Professor of
Philosophy of Media and Techniques*
(full time, permanent position under private law). The University of Vienna intends to increase the number of women on its faculty, particularly in high-level positions, and therefore specifically invites applications by women. Among equally qualified applicants women will receive preferential consideration.
The position is situated in the research group ‘Philosophy of Language, Symbols and Media’ in the Department of Philosophy. Successful candidates are expected to articulate the philosophical implications of the role media and technology play in modern societies and to contextualize them in the perspective of history of science and / or cultural studies. Successful candidates will have an international and outstanding profile and reputation in at least one of the two mentioned areas (Philosophy of Media, Philosophy of Techniques). They will also be willing to engage in interdisciplinary research. Successful candidates are expected to do research and teach on all levels in the Department of Philosophy (Bachelor, Master, PhD).
Successful candidates will have the following qualifications:
- PhD and post-doc experience at a university or other research institution (Austrian or equivalent international academic degree in the relevant field)
- Outstanding research and publication record, with an excellent reputation as an active member in the international academic community ¬(Habilitation (venia docendi) or equivalent international qualification in the relevant field is desirable)
- Experience in designing, procuring and directing major research projects and willingness and ability to assume the responsibility of team leadership
- Experience in university teaching, and willingness and ability to teach at all curricular levels, to supervise theses, and to further the work of junior academic colleagues
The University of Vienna expects the successful candidate to acquire, within three years, proficiency in German sufficient for teaching in Bachelor programmes and participation in committees

- List of talks given, including detailed information about invited plenaries at international conferences
- List of projects supported by third-party funds
- Short survey of previous academic teaching and list of supervised PhD theses
University professors will be classified according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Staff into the salary group A1. The salary will be individually negotiated under consideration of the previous career development and in case of an appointment from abroad of the different tax situation.

*Please note that although the official title is "Philosophy of Media AND Philosophy of Technology", the further details make it clear that an "AND/OR" is intended. (This is perhaps worth stressing since "philosophy of media" or "Medienwissenschaft" does not have an obvious pendant in most non-German-speaking academia.)
