Call for Situating Science Workshop Proposals: Situating Science is soliciting workshop proposals for the timeframe of: Jan. 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012. Up to two Canadian workshops will be funded (up to $10,000 each). Workshop topics should fall under one of the four themes of the Cluster: Science and its Publics; Historical Epistemology and Ontology (including philosophy of science); Material Culture and Scientific/Technological Practices; Geography and Sites of Knowing. Detailed information on the themes can be found at www.situsci.ca. The themes are intended to be broad and flexible. Call for Papers - Gnovis is the online, peer-reviewed, scholarly graduate journal of Georgetown's Communication, Culture and Technology program. Currently accepting submissions for our Fall 2010 Issue on “Difference.” We are soliciting papers that explore old questions of marginalization, access, identity, power and resistance—questions that some may be reluctant to recognize within scholarly writing—in the context of new questions about media, technology, politics and globalization. Specifically, we are soliciting papers that address the relationships between technology, society and race, ethnicity, gender, sex, sexuality, class, disability, nationality and/or age (among other things). 4. Featured Job

 

 The local node of the Situating Science Knowledge Cluster is looking for a Master’s student, who works in Science Studies (very broadly construed) to assist with various tasks this academic year. Specifically, the student will be requested to assist with website creation, newsletter distribution, organizing and running workshops and local events (such as a film series).

 

Pay will be $13.50/hour and the hours will be variable, though should at least amount to 200 hours of work and probably more.

 

Applicants should send a c.v., an account of their interest in science studies (broadly construed), and the names and contact information of three references to Dr. Letitia Meynell (letitia.meynell@dal.ca) by 15 October.

Visiting scholar programme of the Centre for Society and Genomics (CSG), Nijmegen.2-3 months. CSG-researchers work at the intersection of society and the life sciences. Three tenure-line positions at the Communication, Culture and Technology Program at Georgetown University. a. Technology Studies, tenure-track: The program seeks to appoint a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a strong interdisciplinary expertise in approaches to the study of technology, including history, theory, and current methodologies. The appointee will direct the new CCT lab, which will include growing the lab, forming external relations, and pushing toward more cutting-edge, experimental new media technology.  Applicants must be proficient in teaching the technical aspects of how technologies work and how such technologies are employed in communication-related fields. 

b. Cultural History: Assistant Professor, tenure-track position for a cultural historian to teach in the Communication, Culture & Technology (CCT). Research specialization may include, but is not limited to, studies of technologies of communication, material culture, race, class, sex/gender, and national identity.  Candidates who demonstrate classroom experience using new media/digital teaching approaches, such as student-developed websites, blogs, digital stories, documentary film, and digital portfolios, are especially encouraged to apply.

Lecturer in the History of Science. Durham University, UK. Full Time, Fixed Term (1 Jan to 30 June 2011). Closing Date: 26 October 2010. The successful applicant will have a PhD or will be nearing the completion of a PhD.  S/he will provide high quality teaching in the history of science, including its interaction with philosophy and the history of religion, for a range of students at undergraduate and taught postgraduate level. S/he will also perform administrative duties. This lectureship arises from an AHRC research fellowship awarded to Dr Matthew D Eddy. The successful candidate will contribute to the lively research culture of the Department, which has particular strengths in the History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine. PHD Stipends: Anthropological Knowledge. The Mercator Research Group "Spaces of Anthropological Knowledge - Production and Transfer" investigates the production and circulation of knowledge from mid 19th century to today. It focuses on the effects of the introduction of media, technologies and forms of epistemic writing into the science of the human. The interdisciplinary team comprises scholars from History of Science, Literature Studies, Media Studies, and Cultural Psychology. The four areas of study are:

A. History of life sciences and anthropology since the late 19th century; case studies on research practices, conceptual transfers or philosophical and cultural representations of the human

B. Literature and anthropological knowledge around 1900 and research on the history of case studies, production and circulation of textbook knowledge, epistemic writing

C. Media studies with expertise in media history or media-cultural analysis and interests in the history of psychology

D. Ethnographic studies in cultural psychology/science & technology studies, focus on knowledge of the effects of violent media on children and its circulation among diverse areas in society

The John F. Kennedy School of Government and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at Harvard University are seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Fellow with expertise in Science, Technology and Society (STS). The one-year position will carry a teaching load of one undergraduate course in Technology and Society; the successful candidate will also assist in STS Program activities and build links between STS and SEAS. Renewal for a second year may be possible contingent on satisfactory performance. Candidates should be qualified to carry out research on the social implications of one or more aspects of engineering or applied sciences, such as information and communication technologies, biotechnology, or nanotechnology. Areas of specialization might include studies of innovation; risk and regulation; intellectual property; new research partnerships and research governance; or ethical issues in technological R&D. Research experience on comparative, international and global issues is especially welcome. Interdisciplinary teaching experiences are highly desirable. Joint Tenure Track Position in Energy Policy – Departments of Political Science and Environment and Sustainability. The Department of Political Science and the Department of The Environment and Sustainability at Bowling Green State University invites applications for a joint tenure-track position at the assistant professor rank in the field of Environmental Policy to start in August, 2011. A specialization in Energy Policy is preferred. Candidates with a Ph.D. completed are preferred; applications from ABDs will be considered. The successful candidate will have strong potential for research and publication as well as demonstrated effective teaching.  Responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate teaching, conducting research and publishing, and actively participating in departmental programs and service activities.
