During the 1970s and early 1980s, the NSF's social science efforts attracted mounting criticisms from the political and scientific communities. The agency defensive response failed to ward off political scrutiny, which came increasingly from conservative quarters and which during the early Reagan years supported further efforts to diminish NSF?s social science support. At the same time, beneath the social sciences' diminished standing lay a remarkable consistency in the longer history of the NSF's social science efforts.
