112 111 In partnership with the University of King’s College History of Science and Technology programme, History of Science and Technology Society, Dalhousie University Department of English and the Situating Science Strategic Knowledge Cluster, the Halifax Independent Filmmakers Festival (HIFF) launches this year with Yakov Protazanov’s 1924 classic “Aelita: Queen of Mars”.  Based on Alexei Tolstoy's novel of the same name and set in post-war Soviet Union, the film is a futuristic account of travel to Mars and revolt against a suppressive ruling group.

In following the previous years’ successful screenings of “Metropolis” and “Battleship Potempkin”, the film will be accompanied musically by Halifax jazz and experimental musicians Lukas Pearse (bass), Geordie Haley (guitar), Tim Crofts (keyboard) Douglas Cameron (percussion), Greg Jackson (theramin).

The Halifax Independent Filmmakers Festival occurs from April 6-12, 2013. The HIFF launch reception will follow the screening. View more festival information here: www.HIFF.ca

There will be a $5 suggested donation at the door for the musicians.
