SciencePages are backgrounders that summarize the current state of knowledge and
policy on key issues primarily designed for use by Parliamentarians and their staff, but
also for journalists and the public. SciencePages exists to increase discussion on topical
issues that have science at their core.

Each issue of SciencePages engages a team of four interns with backgrounds in
science/engineering, policy, communications, journalism and multi-media. Interns will
have a unique training opportunity to develop skills at the science-policycommunications
interface. Interns are recognized as authors of the published

SciencePages.
SciencePages is an initiative of the Partnership Group for Science and Engineering in

Internship description
SciencePages seeks interns for the upcoming backgrounder on Genomics, in the
following categories:
ıScience a current or recent graduate student in the field of genetics or associated
science
ı Policy Typically this intern will have work experience in policy or be a current or
recent graduate student in public policy.
ı Communications Typically this intern will have work experience in journalism/
communications, or be a current or recent graduate student in communications.
ıAnimation/Multimedia Typically this intern will have work experience in animation or
multimedia or be a current or recent graduate student.

Working closely with two other interns, and the multidisciplinary SciencePages
committee, the intern’s primary responsibilities will include planning, researching, and
assembling a SciencePages issue.

The internship is full-time for a period of 2 weeks although there is some flexibility. The
total time commitment is about 64 hours. The interns must be available in Ottawa during
work hours for the two weeks Oct 29th-November 9th. The Animation/Multimedia intern is
not required to be on site for the entire two weeks, but he or she should be available for
Skype conferences during the time of the internship.

There is a stipend for interns: $1500 for the two weeks.

Responsibilities

Together the interns will:
ı Plan content for SciencePages
ı Research existing literature
ı Interview Canadian experts on genetics, policy and government
ı Write SciencePages using appropriate language and tone for audience
ı Source and prepare graphs and images to complement the note
ıWork with the copy-editing and translation team
ıWork to ensure the effective launch of the issue ı

Qualifications
The qualifications and backgrounds of interns will vary. Passion and enthusiasm are a
requirement. Other qualifications include:
ı Graduate student or professional in a related field
ı Excellent research, analytical and writing skills
ı Excellent written and oral communications skills
ı Demonstrated interest in making science accessible for a broad audience
