Position: Project Assistant

Department/Location: Situating Science Strategic Knowledge Centre office at University of King’s College

Description:
Working under the supervision of the Situating Science Strategic Knowledge Cluster Project Coordinator, the Project Assistant provides administrative support with respect to the organization and coordination of the networking activities of the Cluster.  This position is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada-funded Strategic Knowledge Cluster grant and abides by grant funding policy.  

Start Date:

As soon as possible.

Hrs:
A few hrs/week, pending events, deadlines, and budget. This is a part-time, limited term appointment

Rate of Pay:

TBD

Situating Science will give careful consideration to capable graduate or upper level undergraduate students as student training in the field forms an integral part of the grant’s initiatives.

Student rate of pay to be in accordance with the University of King’s College rates of pay.

Terms of Employment:

September 2012 to January 2013 with possibility of employment renewal, pending budget.

Responsibilities include:

-       Facilitating event planning, promotion, and follow-up

-       Assisting visiting scholars with research and/or administrative needs

-       Updating and maintaining the Situating Science website under the co-supervision of the Cluster webmaster

-       Organizing and managing files and contacts, including Cluster network database

-       Collecting information for and writing sections of final reports, grant proposals and other documents

Qualifications:

-       Appropriate combination of education and experience  

-       Computer and internet literate, with a solid working knowledge of the following Microsoft Office products: Excel, Word and PowerPoint

-       Ability to work flexible hours, sometimes weekends and evenings as events and deadlines dictate

-       Strong written and interpersonal skills as well as attention-to-detail

-       Excellent communication and time-management skills

-       Very self-motivated

Assets:

-       Education or experience in the field of humanities and social studies of science and technology

-       Graphic design experience

-       Website and social media management

-       Audio or video recording and/or streaming, and video or audio editing and uploading

-       Bilingual in English and French

Created in 2007 with the generous funding of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Strategic Knowledge Cluster grant, Situating Science is a seven-year project promoting communication and collaboration among humanists and social scientists that are engaged in the study of science and technology.

Situating Science explores a set of four interrelated themes through networking, conferences, workshops, lecture series, and other activities. These themes are:

2 -Material Culture and Scientific/Technological Practices
3 - Scientific Communication and its Publics
4 - Geography and Sites of Knowing
